Let me tell you from experience how important it is to know how to shoot good digital video with your camcorder before going on that vacation or filming that big event. When I was getting married my sister offered to film the happy day for me with her new camcorder, I agreed as it would save money on the wedding as a videographer could get quite expensive.

Let me tell you how wrong I was, the digital video was dark, shaky and blurred anytime she went into zoom or moved around the room. The sound was off and muffled and it was more of a headache to watch rather than a joy. In a nutshell, I wish I spent money on a good digital video shooting.

I don’t want people to make the same mistake that I did so to spread the word on my learning experience I would like to pass on some great tips on how to shoot good digital video with your Minidv camcorder.

Tip #1 - Do not record while walking or moving about as the digital camcorder cannot stay focused on a moving object. Choose a place to stand and begin by recording a starting point for a few seconds before moving onto the next object. Slowly and carefully pan the camcorder to the next point of focus and hold there for a few more seconds before you stop shooting.

Tip #2 - Avoid excessive zooming of objects, not only does it kill the camcorder battery faster, it can give the viewers a crazy headache. If there were a moment you’d like to catch up close, stand still and take your time while zooming and shooting video, also try to avoid any quick motions, as the image will blur.

Tip #3 - Make sure that the lighting around you is bright enough and do not point the camcorder lens directly facing sunlight, not only can this damage the video camera lens, it will also blacken the images making for an unpleasant movie. If you plan to be indoors, I suggest you invest in a camcorder light attachment that can easily be placed onto the video camera and turned on if needed.

Tip #4 - Last but not least, my favorite camcorder accessory by far has to be a Tripod. You can buy a cheap little mini table tripod for simple videos or you can invest in a larger stand up tripod for longer shooting of video. By using a tripod when recording, you can be assured that your images will not be shaky nor will the movie look amateur.

Can you name the three best rated ultra-compact, compact, and SLR digital cameras? Chances are most people can’t. There are so many choices in digital cameras these days, it’s very difficult to get consensus. What’s more important though, is that you can tell the differences between the three main categories of digital cameras? Those categories being ultra-compact (subcompact), compact, and SLR digital cameras. The Canon PowerShot A570IS is one of the best selling and best rated cameras in this category. It offers some leading technology like image stabilization and face detection for auto focusing.

While both ultra compacts and compacts could be considered point and shoot cameras, our next category is not. The SLR digital camera is the choice of many professionals and serious hobbyist photographers worldwide. SLR stands for Single Lens Reflex. Basically, it means you see through the viewfinder exactly the same picture the camera sees.

Well, that’s enough to scare me away from the C613, but if your really a big Kodak fan, and need a little more convincing, here you go. No speaker for sound when reviewing movies. Zoom ratio doesn’t change constantly. Lefties will find button placement awkward. Movie audio and video are often unsynchronized. Poorly written camera manual. No optical viewfinder. Must use Kodak software for picture transfer. Too many defective cameras out of the box.

If your looking for a really simple camera that absolutely anyone can use, your in luck. I’m not (my dog already has a camera). Personally, I’d spend a few more bucks, and get a camera you know will work, and has a few more usability features.

Consumer Reports is a highly respected consumer focused company that looks out for the everyday shopper. They are well respected, and renowned for their unbiased reviews and objectivity when it comes to finding the pros and cons of any products they review. Digital cameras is just one such product they report on every year.

Firstly, lets start with face recognition focusing. The SD800IS as well as a number of Canons are supposed to recognize peoples faces, and focus on the faces for the best picture. It’s a great idea in theory, but not so good in practice with this PowerShot. When using the face recognition mode, items around, behind, and near the faces in the photographs are in focus, but quite often the face is not. Face recognition is an idea whose time has come, but Canon needs to do a little more work to get it right.

If you total all that up, the top 3 end up being Canon with 85, Sony a distant second with 39, and Nikon a very close third with 37. Everyone else had less than 10 top rated cameras.

This Is The Digital Camera You’ve Been Looking For

Could the Nikon D80 be the holy grail of the entry level digital SLR universe? What I mean by that, is the D80 a product that could finally bridge the gap from point and shoot cameras to the pro SLR level without breaking the bank, and needing a degree in rocket science to take great pictures. From my past experience, I’d have to say that’s not very likely.

Let’s start off with the most important consideration of any camera… image quality. Not so respectable with the DSC-W200. Sony opted to go with 12 mega pixels in this ultra compact. Somewhat akin, to trying to squeeze an elephant into the passenger seat of your Mini Austin. Damn hard to do, and even if your successful, where are you going to drive with an elephant?

Marketing hype aside, 12MP is complete overkill for an ultra compact camera. The majority of pictures from an ultra compact camera are going to be viewed on the LCD, or uploaded to MySpace and FaceBook pages. Nobody is looking to blow these up, frame them, and then hang them over the fireplace. 5 or 6 Megapixels would have been fine. Probably better, as image noise would have been reduced.

Those budding Ansel Adams in the crowd, may be looking for a bit more of a challenge though. For them, the best digital camera will be slightly different. Even if they’re a little reluctant to leave the safety net of point and shoot auto settings, they have nothing to fear.

While this next quibble is minor I agree, I simply have to bring it up. The USB cable provided by Sony for the DSC-W200 is proprietary. I really hate being forced into buying a product that is produced by only one company. I like choice. Sony has a nasty habit of pushing proprietary technology going back to Beta Video, the Memory Stick, and now with the whole Blu-Ray fiasco. Not to say those weren’t good/better technologies, I just like choice.

ISO can only be changed thru the menu (too slow). Dust removing system conspicuously absent (available in other cheaper SLRs). D80 seals are not exactly industrial strength quality. New owners must be wary of dead pixel issues. Use of SD memory cards negates consumers existing CF card collection. Small grip for big hands.

Well, perhaps not the worst review for a camera, but at the $800 price point, consumers have a right to expect more from Nikon. Especially when other manufacturers offer more feature rich cameras at comparable or lower prices. Be sure to have a good look around. The the Nikon D80 SLR is in a competitive market, with lots of choices for the consumer.

At one time megapixels would have made the top three, probably even the number one factor. Due to the rapid advance of digital photography, that time has come and past. Any camera with more than 5 or 6 megapixels will be more than adequate for the average (and higher) photographer these days.

Compound that, with the fact it’s virtually impossible to buy a new digital camera with less than 5 megapixels and it becomes a non factor in your purchase decision.

Be prepared to spend extra for memory cards (more than one, if you frequently take lots of outdoors shots and can’t bring a laptop with you to download the pictures once the card gets full), spare batteries (also, you should get more than one set, just to be on the safe side), tripods, filters and lenses (if you are buying a DSLR) and external flashes.

Battery life is often better, as rechargeable battery packs is an option with this group of cameras. High resolution LCD and optical viewfinders are often both available with these cameras. It’s good to have both options for framing pictures.

Whichever category of camera you buy into, image quality is and should be a high priority. Try out each camera at different by taking pictures at different ISO settings. A reliable salesman should be able to show you how to adjust ISO, if your not sure.

Take a look at the the quality of the images. Typically as you shoot at higher ISO settings image noise (distortion, artifacts) begin to show up. Uploading the pictures to a camera can help with this comparison.

If your the type that gets lost navigating through Google’s home page, your gonna have a blast with digital camera menus. Digital cameras have plenty of features, and they’re all buried in some geek programmers vision of user accessible menus. Over the last few years I came across zillions of family pictures. Some are good, some are excellent, but I’ve seen so many common mistakes that I decided to write this article, to provide you with some picture taking tips. You have everything set up in the back of your head, and now the big day has come. You have your bags packed up, left the front door key to Aunt Martha to water the flowers and feed the dog and programmed your navigation system to point the route to the destination and you’re set to go. Of course, you want to take many pictures, because this is going to be a vacation to remember! What now? Well, here we go…

As silly as it may sound, one in five families have left their camera at home on their dream vacation at least once. I always put my camera, lenses, batteries, charger, data cable, memory cards and all the accessories that come with my DSLR in the backpack next to the laptop - it’s less likely that I leave both the laptop and the camera at home.

All in all, the 5d Mk2 is a good choice for a Cannon SLR digital camera. But if you will use it mainly to shoot videos, you might want to rethink getting a model that operates on 29.97 fps instead.
