3 Different Types Of Camera

This article will outline 3 different types of cameras: Box, Folding-Roll, and Viewfinder. This information will help you decide which camera suits your photography needs the best.

For over several decades the box camera was the gadget of choice for the typical amateur photographer. This is because it was cheap and simple, yet still capable of excellent results under most conditions. Box cameras were usually fitted with a single-element lens, a limited range opening control, and a single-speed shutter.

Next up is the Folding-Roll Film Camera, which was also very popular but not quite as much so as the box camera. The folding camera came in several types of formats, but basically, it was a box camera whose lens was included into a movable disk that could slide back and forth on a rail, allowing the lens to change focus from close to long range.

There were more complicated models available, but they were more expensive and considered very high quality. But, the most important benefit that they had over the box camera, was their compact design when folded, which made them easier to pack and transport. There has been something of a minor renaissance in folding-roll film cameras in recent years, with appearance of several new professional instruments. They are appreciated for their large negative size and compact design.

Next is a Viewfinder type camera which does not use a lens to view the subject but instead relies on a separate viewing system in the camera for aiming and for focus. The range finder camera allows for accurate focus, however, by using two views of the same subject to adjust focus. In this camera there are two images in the viewfinder. One is usually only a portion of the viewer area and is usually slightly yellowish in color. The photographer adjusts the focus ring on the lens and as they do the two images move. When both on directly on top of each other they blend together and almost disappear which signifies that the camera is in focus. The rangefinder is accurate and very quiet as well as being light weight. It is also useful for taking pictures in low light conditions or for candid photographs. These cameras can easily be spotted because of their double view windows in the front.

Enjoy your photography hobby and remember ” keep experimenting with different angles and new lighting. Dont be afraid to get creative!

Digital Photography Lessons - Do You HATE Those Irritating Shadows?

Are there distracting shadows ruining your photographs?

Unfortunately, shadows are a constant challenge for photographers. Fortunately, there are quite a few easy but effective fixes.

First, what causes the shadow? Well, obviously it is caused by the light hitting your subject and not hitting the background behind them.

The first “fix” if you’re having a problem with distracting, ugly shadows on your backdrop…remove the backdrop. If there is nothing behind your model, there is nothing for the shadow to fall on, therefor there’s no visible shadow.

So, start out by removing the background if you can.

When your photo shoot is being done outside, all you have to do is move your model so that there is no backdrop behind them. Pretty simple.

If your shoot is being done indoors, your clearly can’t remove the walls, but you can be sure your model is further away from them. Do your shooting with your model in the middle of the room rather than right up next to the wall. It makes a better picture and your shadow difficulties will evaporate.

Another fix is; have a light hitting the background.

When using “studio” type lighting…just get your model lit the way you like and then add in another light source that lights up the backdrop and totally misses the model.

Adding the extra light can be more than just a shadow remover. By adding in scrims, cookies and colored gels to modify the light, it becomes a part of the design of the photo. The modifiers will throw colors, patterns and shapes on your backdrop.

Here’s how light and shadows work. Imagine a billiards table, light is like a ball sitting on the table. If you roll it into the cushion, it will bounce off at the same angle it hit the cushion. Light is like that. It bounces off at the same angle it hits the subject. (When trying to eliminate eyeglass glare - remember that tip.)

Shadows don’t bounce, they are ALWAYS perfectly in line with the light. You can fix your problem shadow by moving the light so that it strikes the subject in such a way that the shadows fall into an area that won’t be in the picture.

Outdoors this would be done by deciding which direction you want the light to hit your model and then moving them to the proper position. With a studio lighting system indoors, you move and adjust the lights to find the best angles. If you are stuck using an on camera flash, you can bounce the light off a wall or the ceiling. This will effectively change the angle the light is coming from and striking your model. Be careful the ceiling and walls are not painted a color that will throw an odd color cast on the subject.

The harshness and intensity of a shadow is caused by the relative strength and size of the light.

If you lower the intensity of the light, that will also lower the intensity of the associated shadow. It will still be there, but you may be able to minimize its’ distracting effect.

Two easy ways to lower a lights’ intensity are; use the same power settings, but move the light further from the subject or simply use less power to the light. (Good studio lighting systems have multiple power settings.)

You can wrap light around a model - and minimize the shadows - by making the light bigger. This is done with reflectors, softboxes and umbrellas.

You can consider a softbox or an umbrella as being like a cloud. When a cloud moves between the sun and your subject, the entire cloud becomes the light source. This obviously is a much larger light than just the sun by itself. The light wraps around the model and minimizes the shadow. Go outside and observe shadows from the sun and from a cloud. You’ll see a huge difference.

This article is just a simple primer on light, shadows and diffusion. There are entire books written on the subject and I’d suggest reading a few.

Happy shooting.

Upscaling Toshiba Televisions

You will already be familiar with standard definition television and you will have heard about high definition, but what about near High Definition?

Near High Definition is a new feature that television producers have created for raising the picture quality of Standard Definition (SD) broadcasts to a claimed Near HD quality.

Why do you need a near High Definition Television?

Whilst there is an increasing amount of HD content available via Sky and Freesat it isnt possible to watch all available programs in High Definition. The only other sources of HD are Blu-ray and downloads from the internet. Furthermore if you arent prepared to pay a monthly subscription or pay for Blu-ray discs then the choice is limited to Freesat or a small selection of On Demand programmes and movies from Virgin Media or Tiscali. With such a limited choice of High Definition content the television manufacturers believe there is a case for near High Definition televisions that upscale the picture to allow you to make the most of your HD television.

What is Standard Definition?

The picture of a PAL television consists of thousands of pixels. On a standard definition television the picture is made up of horizontal lines that are made up of 768 pixels and there are 576 horizontal lines i.e.768 pixels x 576 pixels.

A moving television picture is created by showing a series of 25 still frames every second. Each frame contains a still image with slight changes from frame to frame. Each of these frames is divided into two fields, one of which contains all of the odd lines and the other all of the even lines. The displaying of a moving picture using these fields is known as deinterlacing where the two fields of a single frame are combined to form a full frame. The odd fields and the even fields are alternately painted or scanned on to the TV screen each at a rate of 25 fields a second or 50 fields a second when combined. This is where the term a 50 Hz picture has comes from.

The number of pixels that make up a picture is known as the resolution. So a television with more pixels will have a higher resolution. Generally the higher the resolution is on a television the sharper the image that it can produce. Televisions with a high resolution are known as High Definition televisions.

High Definition broadcasts in the United Kingdom are at 720P (1280×720 pixels) or 1080i (1920×1080 pixels). If you want to experience HD TV programmes you will need a TV set that is at least HD Ready with a resolution of 720P (1280×720 pixels). There are also higher resolution televisions than HD Ready TVs known as Full HD Ready 1080P (1920×1080 pixels) but there are not any 1080P broadcasts available at present. To benefit from this increased resolution you will have to rely on Blu Ray discs or HD down loads from the web.

A Full HD Ready 1080p television has a picture resolution that is about 5 times the resolution of a Standard Definition television. This is why with suitable source material a Full HD television has such a stunning picture.

On TVs that have Near HD they use an upscaler to transform an SD picture into 1080P.

An Upscaler is also referred to as an Upconverter which converts the resolution of a source signal. Upscaler can convert low resolution images to a resolution that fills the screen. When a Full HD 1080P TV, with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels, receives a signal from a DVD or a Freeview broadcast of 768×576 pixels it has to upscale the image to fill the screen. It does this because the two resolutions are different and if it didnt upscale the image then some parts of the screen wouldnt be filled by the picture and it would be smaller the screen.

The upscaling in a HD TV is performed by a video processing chip which first interlaces the fields of the frames that create the picture using complex digital algorithms and filters that interpolate the picture by estimating what the extra pixels and lines should look like. This is done to match the incoming signal resolution with the native resolution of the TV.

How well a television upscales an image will depend on the quality of the incoming signal and the quality of the processing chip. Different televisions have different abilities to upscale a picture. The quality of the upscaled image that is displayed will also depend on the quality of the TV sets electronic components and the screen.

An upscaler is required by all LCD and Plasma TVs so that they are compatible with the various source resolutions that they may be presented with so that they fill the native resolution of the screen. It may seem that the Near HD TVs arent doing anything different to any other LCD or Plasma TV but it is how they do it that is different. The Near HD TVs use a more powerful upscaling processor chip which means that they are much better at upscaling than ordinary TVs.

No matter how sophisticated the algorithms are that guesstimate how the additional pixels should look an upscaled SD image isnt as good as an actual true 1080P HD picture.

Toshiba have a range of TVs that use the cell processor from the Sony PS3 to upscale the image to the Near HD 1080P resolution. Toshiba have called this feature Resolution + which is featured in their ZV series of TVs. This feature vastly improves the picture quality of a SD picture source.

The enhanced picture is achieved by the cell processor comparing adjacent image frames which it then combines the pixel detail of to enhance the definition. The picture quality is clearer with sharper and richer pictures. The detail is enhanced which sharpens the edge of images and reduces 3D noise. The colour palette is more natural due to enhancement of the blue and green shades minimizing the loss of clarity that upscaling can often cause. Contrast Enhancement results in dark areas becoming darker whilst at the same time the bright areas maintain their brightness. This results in Standard Definition images being crisp and rich with sharper edges and improved texture but the flat areas are not changed.

DVD Players with Near HD

A DVD players with near HD picture processing isnt the same as one with progressive scan which converts interlaced images into full frames by combining the two fields that make up the frame so that they are both displayed at the same time. This results in more fluid motion, improved vertical resolution and no interlace artifacts such as flickering between lines. Progressive scan uses the existing two A and B fields pixels from each frame to create a full frame but it doesnt generate additional lines or pixels like an upscaler does.

An upscaling DVD player uses the same methods as an upscaling television. There are a number of upscaling DVD players from different manufacturers but non of these work in the same way as the Toshiba XDE model which deinterlaces the picture before upscaling it from 576i lines to 1080P Near High Definition quality. The picture on the Toshiba upscaling DVD player is improved with images that are extra detailed with brilliant colours and enhanced contrast by employing the methods used on the Toshiba Near HD TVs.

Should you buy Near HD TVs and DVD Players?

Obviously an upscaled SD 576 line picture is not as good as a 1080P Full HD picture no matter how much digital processing is done. Nonetheless there is no doubt that a much better upscaler in a television produces a noticeable improvement in the picture quality so that it is closer to 1080P picture. A Near HD TV makes even more sense if you arent willing to pay a monthly charge for HD from Sky, Virgin Medias Cable, Tiscalis Service or Blu-Ray discs. Even if you opt for Freesat there is a limited amount of HD channels available so your choice of programmes is limited. Because HD isnt freely available, especially with out paying for it, a Near HD TV is worth considering that will produce an improved picture with virtually any content including 480i, 576i, 720p as well as DVD, Standard Definition Broadcasts and computer games. With all of these sources the picture will be upscaled to 1080P.

A further benefit of purchasing a Near HD TV is that if more free HD content becomes accessible in the future or if you subscribe to Skys HD service then you will not need to buy a HD TV because the Near HD TVs are also Full HD 1080P TVs. In the United Kingdom the only Near HD products that are currently available are made by Toshiba but other products will be launched by alternative manufacturers soon.

The Rise of Panasonic

Panasonic was founded by Konosuke Matsushita in Japan in 1918 and was originally known as Matsushita. Konosuke initially operated from a rented two-story house where he used the first floor to manufacture electric devices.

It wasnt long before Panasonic outgrew the upstairs of his house and it needed to move to a large workshop in 1920 which allowed them to make additional products. Virtually from the beginning Panasonics products were innovative, well designed, high quality and at affordable prices. One of the initial products that Panasonic made was a double adaptor which made it possible to connect two light bulbs into a single socket. The growth of Panasonic continued until 1922 when it was necessary to move to yet a bigger building.

In 1923 Konosuke Matsushita designed a bullet shaped bicycle lamp that had a battery life that was ten times longer than a conventional light. The light was a very popular and successful product.

During 1927 Panasonic started manufacturing their first electric iron that was at a price that many could afford.

By 1931 Panasonic began to manufacture a product that they are more known for today. They designed and manufactured an award winning radio that had 3 tubes, the R31. Panasonic patented part of its design and then allowed other manufacturers to use their innovative design to encourage the expansion of the radio industry.

In 1952 Panasonic had designed a rectangular cathode ray tube (CRT) which was an industry first. Up to this point television tubes had been round but they soon all became rectangular. They incorporated their rectangular tube in to an affordable black and white television. Throughout the 1950s Panasonic also researched ways of recording video.

By 1960 Panasonic had produced their first mass manufactured television that had a colour picture tube.

During 1991 Panasonic manufactured the first rewriteable optical disc recorder for television images which was a forerunner to the DVD recorder. They also made a commitment to environmental responsibility in 1991 with an environmental charter.

Panasonic is now the 5th largest manufacture of electronic products by value in the world with over 600 companies and 306,000 employees. They manufacture over 15,000 products and have over 40,000 patents in Japan and 54,000 patents outside of Japan. In 2007 alone they filed 2100 patents which were the most filed by any company in the world during that year.

Throughout its history Panasonic has innovated with designs that improve on other products that are available in the market. Their products are always high quality and provide solutions to everyday problems for ordinary peoples life. By not accepting the normal ways of doing things Panasonic has consistently produced ground breaking products that are better than others in the market.
